Danner’s “Words in a Time of War” Assignment

After reading the commence address, “Words in a Time of War” (2007), Mark Danner, Professor of Journalism at the University of California at Berkeley, delivered a strong speech to the graduating students by including all the elements that a speech should have. There are many aspects and pieces of this speech that I want to mimic in my own writing and speaking. For example, Danner says “Dear parents, I welcome you today to your moment of triumph”(Danner 1). This was a great way use of a hook because it allows the audience to feel included. I would like to mimic this in my writings by mentioning the audience because I feel like it would make my writings stronger by improving all my literary elements and devices. Also, Danner used a lot of diction in his speech that I would like to implement into my writings. For example, Danner said, “Now, here’s an astonishing fact”(Danner 1). The rhetorical move that he used for that quote was diction because he gave emphasis to the word “astonishing” by making it seem like the fact is very important. The use of diction would further improve my writing.
